About the ratings
The ratings in this page are calculated using the Folyami system, an Elo-like system adapted for racing competitions and, in particular, ZakStunts. The technical details on the system works and how it differs from Elo are outlined in The Folyami Rating System page. In the following paragraphs, I will focus on the aspects specific to its current implementation for ZakStunts.
Two rankings are assembled from the ratings: current and historical. The current ranking lists the rating for each racer after the most recent race they took part in, while the historical ranking lists the personal best rating reached by each racer over the entire history of the competition. The rankings have complementary purposes: while the current ranking is very dynamic and responsive to form, the historical rating provides lasting records and milestones.
To be included in either ranking, a racer must have completed at least five ZakStunts races, so that their rating can stabilise to some extent after starting from the arbitrary initial value of 1500. Additionally, in accordance with the dynamic, responsive to form nature of the current ranking, racers must race at least once every four races to remain in it. Racers who leave the current ranking due to inactivity can rejoin it at any time by taking part of a race, with their ratings preserved.
While the rating values shown in the rankings are integers, the calculations are done with decimal numbers, with the results only being rounded down for display in the final tables. The order of racers in the rankings is set according to the values before rounding; there are no other tiebreakers. The choice of rounding down, rather than to the nearest integer, was made so that one can look at the rankings and claim that, for instance, someone has reached 2000 points while being sure that the actual result won’t turn out to be, say, 1999.93. The rating differences shown in the tables, as in the “change” column of the current ranking, are taken between the rounded down values for consistency.
The historical data of ZakStunts results used to obtain the ratings was reviewed to eliminate inconsistencies which might muddle up the results. In particular, known ghosts have been excluded altogether from the calculations (legitimate name changes and pseudonyms, on the other hand, have been merged). Additionally, there are three Folyami-specific exclusion rules for race results, which aim at keeping obviously unrepresentative results from affecting the ratings. They are:
EX1 (“Bonzai Joe rule”): Results attained with times above 300% of the winning time and more than two standard deviations above the average time are excluded.
EX2 (“Marco rule”): Results known to have been attained while driving under restrictive racing rules (such as GAR or NoRH) are excluded.
EX3 (“Alan Rotoi rule”): Results attained with a clearly uncompetitive car are excluded. A clearly uncompetitive car is one that is only present in the bottom fourth (rounded up) of the scoreboard, and that wasn’t used to reach a better result than anyone driving a car that isn’t clearly uncompetitive and whose result has not been excluded by the EX1 and EX2 rules.
- For instance, in a race with 17 entries there are Lancias from 1st to 12th and Carreras from 13th to 17th, the Carrera is an uncompetitive car. However, if there is only one Carrera in 13th place amidst sixteen Lancias, the Carrera is not uncompetitive, as it has ended up ahead of some of the Lancias.)
Results excluded under those three rules do not count towards reaching the five race threshold for entering the ranking, nor do they count as race activity for the purpose of remaining in the current ranking.
The ZakStunts results data set used to compute the ratings are available in the GitHub repository of the project. If you spot a mistake or an omission in the data, it can be reported through the usual channels, or through an issue or pull request at GitHub.
